The second highest peak in the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Ingleborough at its summit reaches 723 metres. Its plateau is encircled by the remains of a massive stone rampart, containing the foundations of Iron Age huts, from which it gets the second part of its name; borough, derived from the Old English word burh, meaning "a fortified place" or ‘hill fort’. Ingleborough has a ridge extending to the north-east which develops into the summits, Simon Fell, and Park Fell further down. 
 
This scene is taken from the Chapel-le-Dale side of the peak. Facing south by south west, it takes in the many crags and the mix of ancient Silurian and Ordovician rocks along with limestone shelves giving it a layered, ‘tired’ appearance
