Lud’s Church is a deep natural chasm in the land, known for it’s mossy, steep
rock walls. It stretches over 100 metres long, 18 metres deep and has a cool,
moist climate even on hotter days. Some believe this chasm inspired the
Green Chapel of ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’, others trace the name Lud
back to older gods (Lugh or Lludd) hinting at rituals tied to midsummer.
Supposedly the ‘Lollards’ (christian followers of church reformer, John
Wycliffe) used this as a secret place of worship during the early 15th century
when they were being persecuted for their religious beliefs.
 
This scene depicts a view from the east entrance/exit, looking west down the
cavern.
