The Roaches are part of a vast gritstone escarpment above Leek in the Staffordshire Peak District, along with Hen Cloud and the Ramshaw Rocks. Rising to 505m (1,657 ft) it’s a popular destination for thrill seekers, rock climbers, runners and ramblers alike. The name Roaches comes from the French word ‘Roches’, meaning rocks and Hen Cloud comes from the old English ‘Henge Clud’ which in an equally exciting turn meant ‘Steep Rock’. Whilst the names for the formations are factual in nature the small pond atop the roaches, known as ‘Doxey Pool’ is much more mysterious. It’s said to be inhabited by a water sprite called Jenny Greenteeth who became such after falling in the pool on a foggy day and ever since entices unsuspecting victims to join her.
