Ynys Llanddwyn lies on the south western tip of Ynys Môn (Anglesey) and is one of the most celebrated coastal landscapes in Wales, part of Newborough National Nature Reserve & Forest. The island is closely associated with Saint Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, who is said to have lived here as a hermit after a heartbreak of her own. Her 5th century church once stood on the island, making this an important place of pilgrimage for centuries; whilst recent discoveries point to even older buildings below the ruins.

The name 'Llanddwyn' translates roughly as 'The Church of Saint Dwynwen', whilst 'Ynys' simply means 'island' in Welsh. Despite its name, the island is only truly an island at high tide, becoming connected to the mainland by vast expanses of sand when the sea retreats.

This scene overlooks the Goleudy Tŵr Mawr (Great Tower) Llanddwyn Lighthouse, with views across the sea to the peaks of Yr Eifl, Garn Fôr and others in the Llŷn Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
