The highest peak in Cymru, Yr Wyddfa (pronounced ‘uhr-with-va’) hits 1,085 meters. The English name of Snowdon comes from the Old English/Saxon ‘snow hill’. The Welsh, Yr Wyddfa roughly translating to ‘burial mound’ hints at the more legendary story of the giant king, Rhita Gawr, who is said to be buried here after challenging the valiant King Arthur to combat in a bid to win his beard (which he would collect to make his cloak). In more recent history this impressive summit was used by the British Everest Expedition team who trained on these slopes the winter before completing the first ascent of Everest in 1953.

This scene is taken from just off the Llanberis Path approach, facing south east with the Yr Wyddfa summit to the right of the view. Panning left you follow Gallt y Wenallt, a subsidiary summit of Y Lliwedd and part of the Yr Wyddfa horseshoe. This is followed by the quiet summit of Carnedd y Cribau. The visible lakes are Glaslyn (Blue lake') in the foreground, followed by Llyn Llydaw ('Brittany lake’).
